Andrew Garfield reiterated his past comments that he will not discuss his romantic relationships or personal life in a new interview, though he said he could amend that stance in the future
Garfield has been romantically linked to actress Monica Barbaro since February 2025, though neither actor has publicly confirmed their romance
The duo will costar in an upcoming movie titled Artificial, based on the real-life tech company OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman
Andrew Garfield still is not ready to discuss his romantic relationships or his private life.
When Garfield, 43, sat down with Esquire U.K. for a profile published Tuesday, Aug. 25, as he promotes new projects like The Uprising, Artificial and Wild Things, the actor drew a line in the sand when asked about his plans regarding his romantic life moving forward.
“I’ll say it on the record: it’s not something I will ever talk about,” the actor said, echoing his 2024 comments to the American version of Esquire, when he said, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever.”

Those past comments came before Garfield was romantically linked to Monica Barbaro in February 2025, when a source told PEOPLE the couple were “spending time together quietly” after fans spotted them at a play in London.
Barbaro, 36, has been by Garfield’s side at a number of public events since, and the actors will costar in an upcoming movie titled Artificial, based on real-life tech company OpenAI. In the movie, Garfield portrays the company’s CEO Sam Altman, while Barbaro portrays OpenAI’s then-chief technology officer Mira Murati.
Still, Garfield said he may be open to talking about his personal life down the road. “Maybe if I’m married with kids and 10 years into the relationship I might feel comfortable saying ‘my wife and my kids,’ ” he told the outlet. “Maybe. But maybe f---ing not!”

Esquire U.K. noted in its profile that its interview with Garfield took place “approximately 40 feet” from where Barbaro was performing in a London production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in June. Barbaro, for her part, has also refrained from speaking about her life with Garfield in interviews over the last year, beyond praising his acting skills during an interview with InStylepublished Aug. 5.
“I mean, he’s one of the best actors of his generation, our generation,” she said in that interview, regarding working with Garfield on Artificial. “I just learned a lot from his approach to the material and to developing character, and I felt very fortunate to get to witness that in real time.”
Barbaro, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2025 for her performance in A Complete Unknown, also said that working with Garfield made her feel she needed to prove herself in their scenes together. “Oh s---, I really have to step up my game and make sure I’m a proper, legitimate scene partner,” she added of the experience.

Garfield and Barbaro costar in Artificial with Yura Borisov (Anora) and Ike Barinholtz, who portrays OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk. The movie’s supporting cast also includes Mark Rylance, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, Billie Lourd and Zosia Mamet. Luca Guadagnino, whom Garfield just worked with on last year’s After the Hunt, directed the movie.

Artificial does not yet have a release date. Garfield’s other fall release, The Uprising, is in theaters Sept. 11, while his upcoming Apple TV series Wild Things is also awaiting a release date.
