Elgort's mom is opera director Grethe Holby, and his dad is Vogue photographer Arthur Elgort.
Speaking with the publication when he was first making a name for himself in the early 2010s, the star opened up about his father and how he would get him involved in his photography — which led to Elgort's first exposure with fame.
"My dad would throw me in the picture if they needed an extra," Elgort told Vogue. "From an early age, I understood the concept that, if you're not the star, then your job is to not pull attention away from the star."
Elgort's Hollywood career kicked off in 2013, when he starred in Carrie, a film adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel, opposite Chloë Grace Moretz.
He rose to more internal fame shortly after, through his portrayal of a teenage cancer patient in The Fault in Our Stars (2014) and for his work in the Divergent film series.
Some of his other major roles include playing Tony in Steven Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story adaptation, as well as the lead in Baby Driver, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Elgort — who trained as a dancer at age nine and studied for five years at the School of American Ballet before graduating from LaGuardia High School — also recently made his professional dance debut in Quadrophenia, A Rock Ballet, based on The Who’s 1973 album of the same name.
