Speaking during the 2026 TIME100 Summit interview in New York City, Hilary Duff reminisced on her years as a child star, revealing what that time gave her and what it took from her. Duff said that growing up in the business forced her to carry adult responsibilities long before most kids ever would.
Her comments offered a grounded picture of life behind fame that comes early in a child artist’s career — one that is a result of hard work and a level of discipline the actress says still defines her now.
Hilary Duff reveals she had to work ‘as an adult since such a young age’
Hilary Duff sat for an interview at the 2026 TIME100 Summit, talking about returning to music and starting out as an artist at a young age. She rose to fame on “Lizzie McGuire” and went on to build a long career in film, television, and music.
The 38-year-old said that watching recent documentaries about child stardom has been emotional for her, telling the interviewer, “It’s such a long time ago, but it’s an out-of-body experience.”

At the same time, Duff admitted, “I feel very grateful that I wasn’t put in too many positions that left, you know, battle wounds on me.” However, she did not downplay the demands that came with starting so young. “I have held a job as an adult since I was 9 years old,” adding that she had “a very different upbringing” with “a lot of missed experiences, but also a lot of amazing” ones.
The singer-songwriter said, “It doesn’t take away the fact that I, you know, worked as an adult since such a young age and had to be able to hold my own in a room full of adults constantly.”
Duff further revealed that people expected her “to show up and be professional and, you know, through exhaustion or sickness or whatever, just keep grinding.”
Hilary Duff said those years “taught me a lot and it’s completely formed who I am and I’m proud of that person,” showing a woman who understands both the cost and the strength that came from rising to fame in the public eye.
