ABC's hit workplace comedy series, Abbott Elementary Season 6, is back with a fresh episode this week. Titled Tryouts, Episode 3 of Abbott Elementary Season 6 was released on October 21, 2026. According to the synopsis, Melissa and Barbara will take a special ed certification course. Janine, Jacob, and Gregory will welcome a new substitute, and the step team will try out for a major competition.

Episode 3 kicks off with Jacob Hill addressing the teacher and staff about introducing new lunch options in the Cafeteria. Tariq suggests serving ribs, but Jacob argues that the menu should be kid-friendly. Tariq counters that they would not require silverware. As Tariq attempts to get everyone dancing, Jacob reminds them that they still have several tasks to complete. The scene ends with the staff line dancing to Coldplay's Viva La Vida.

Jacob asks Ava whether they can use the gym to test reverb for the podcast. However, Ava informs them that the gym is occupied by the step dance team. Meanwhile, Mr. Johnson is busy recording and auditioning for the step dance team for The Homeroom Showdown All-School Dance contest. If their audition tape impresses the organizers, the team will get a chance to represent West Philly at regionals. If they win the regionals, they will win tickets to Disneyland. However, Ava is skeptical about their chances.

Elsewhere, Melissa Schemmenti is busy teaching mathematics when Pitman, the special needs teacher, is seen aiding a student, Michael. However, Melissa isn't happy with someone interrupting her class. Pitman tells her about the special ed certification course.

Meanwhile, Janine, Gregory, and Jacob watch Mr. Johnson lecturing the new substitute teacher, Natalie, about trash picking. Gregory tells them that the students seem to like Natalie. Jacob suggests bringing Natalie to the inner circle and invites her for dinner at Bone Town, and Natalie agrees.

Melissa asks Barbara to join the special ed certification course, and she agrees. However, they arrive late for the class, and Pitman isn't happy with it.

The step dance team tells Ava that they have made it to the tryouts.

Back at Bone Town, Natalie joins Gregory, Janine, and Jacob for dinner. Natalie reveals she is a Catholic nun and that she has never been to Bone Town before. Jacob mistakes Natalie's attire for a Halloween costume initially.

Elsewhere, Ava and Mr. Johnson take the step dance team for the final audition. Melissa and Barb disturb the entire class by murmuring their dinner plans, and Pitman has to make them sit separately. Melissa and Barb try to overtake Pitman's class. As a result, Pitman asks them to leave the classroom.

Ava knows that the competition is tough, and she does not want to give false hopes to the team. Mr. Johnson, however, doesn't think so. When Michael struggles during the lunch line-up announcement, Melissa and Barb offer him sensory headphones, a lesson they learned in Pitman's class.

Gregory, Janine, and Jacob plan to make Natalie resign. However, it turns out that Natalie is already quitting. She informs them that she took up a job at a Jesuit school.

At the end of Episode 3 of Abbott Elementary Season 6, the step dance team gets selected for regionals. Melissa and Barb get serious about their special ed classes.
