Jonathan Lipnicki, who starred in Jerry Maguire as a child, wants to set the record straight on an old interview.

The actor says his past comments on his career trajectory were taken out of context.

Lipnicki appears in A24’s Primetime, now in theaters.

Jonathan Lipnicki is clarifying some past remarks he feels were taken out of context.

The Primetime actor, known for starring alongside Tom Cruise and RenĂ©e Zellweger in Jerry Maguire, reflected on his career trajectory in a PEOPLE interview last year, with his comment “I pray every night for clarity on where I need to go” making headlines.

“I definitely wanna set the record straight on that,” Lipnicki tells Entertainment Weekly while promoting Primetime. “That was taken way out of context
and it actually bugged me a bit.”

He adds, “I was saying that it’s a positive thing, right? If you have something to strive for, something to work towards, it gives you purpose.”

After starring in a string of popular movies as a child, like 1996’s Jerry Maguire, 1999’s Stewart Little, and 2002’s Like Mike, Lipnicki acknowledged in his 2015 interview with PEOPLE that “It’s totally fine to say I’m not where I want to be career-wise.”

Lipnicki reiterates that point with EW, adding, “I’m totally okay with everything that’s happened. I’m so grateful for the career I had before. I’m grateful for where I am presently, and I’m very excited for the future.”

Referring to his past comment about praying for clarity, the actor notes, “I pray because I’m grateful. And I also pray for clarity, and I pray for the best things to happen, of course. But the most important parts of my prayers are praying for other people that are dear to me, that I love.”

While he concedes Hollywood “can be a very tough industry,” he notes, “anything worth doing in this life is incredibly difficult, nearly impossible, and I’m glad that I spent my life getting to do this and chase that, whether it’s a leaner time, or a really exciting time like right now.”

In addition to Primetime, which is now in theaters and also stars Robert Pattinson and Skyler Gisondo, the actor touts upcoming films Williston, premiering Nov. 8 at the Coronado Film Festival; Butcher’s War with Aaron Eckhart, releasing this summer; and the undated Mazel Tough, which he’s executive producing.

“I’m very excited. I’m very optimistic,” he says. “Any bumps or bruises along the way, I will tell you; I don’t like it spun in a negative way. I’ve never been negative. I have always been someone who says, ‘Hey, things can be rough,’ because I want to be honest. But I’ve never felt sorry for myself a day in my life. I love making movies, and I will do it forever.”
