Authorities have confirmed Robert Carradine's official cause and manner of death.
The Lizzie McGuire star died at 71 from sequelae of anoxic brain injury and hanging on Monday, according to records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner's office. Records listed the actor's manner of death as suicide and reported that he died in a hospital.
Carradine's family told Deadline that the actor was diagnosed with bipolar disorder almost 20 years ago.
"In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon on light to everyone around him," they said. "We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby's valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness. At this time we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion."

The Revenge of the Nerds star's brother, actor Keith Carradine, offered his perspective on his brother's mental health condition.
"There is no shame in it," he told Deadline. "It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That's who my baby brother was."

Carradine's death prompted a number of tributes from his former costars, including one from Hilary Duff, who portrayed his daughter on the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire.
"This one hurts. It's really hard to face this reality about an old friend," Duff wrote in an Instagram post on Monday. "There was so much warmth in the McGuire family, and I always felt so cared for by my onscreen parents. I'll be forever grateful for that. I'm deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him , his family, and everyone who loved him."
Jamie Lee Curtis, who dated the actor early in her career, also mourned her "first love" Carradine with a lengthy tribute. "I met him live on television on The Dinah Shore Show when they had a bunch of second-generation actors — we would call them now nepo babies," she recalled on Facebook. "Bobby rearranged where we were all sitting so that he could sit next to me and he kissed me, live on television. A very public meet-cute."
