Lodi's mayor saw Eddie Brigati of The Rascals perform in the borough in the 1980s. He's invited him back to be honored at the fall fest on Oct. 24.
LODI — Decades after Eddie Brigati Jr. took the stage in Lodi, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend is coming back to be celebrated by a borough that traces part of his family's story to its own streets.
Brigati, a member of the Rascals who was recently inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, will receive an honorary "key to the city" from the Lodi mayor and council during the borough's fall festival on Oct. 24, an honor highlighting the Bergen County roots he shares with his late brother, David Brigati.
The brothers grew up on Monroe Street in Garfield, but their connection to Lodi goes back a generation. Their parents lived on Farnham Avenue in Lodi before moving to neighboring Garfield to raise their family, Mayor Scott Luna said.

For Luna, the tribute is also personal.
"I saw both brothers perform here in Lodi in the late '80s at a summer show, which made me a bigger fan. My mother grew up in Garfield and was good friends with David Brigati," Luna said. "We have been doing history spotlights on Lodi musicians lately and I said, 'I have to recognize and honor these two guys.' "

David Brigati died on March 7 at age 85. His singing career also began in Garfield, and he was later recruited by another New Jersey musician, Joseph DiNicola, to join his band, Joey Dee & the Starliters.
The Lodi Fall Festival will run from 1 to 9 p.m. at 1 Memorial Drive. Eddie Brigati is expected to be honored at about 2 p.m., following a musical tribute by cover band Altered State.
And the celebration will reach across the municipal border.
To incorporate the Brigatis' Garfield roots, members of the Garfield High School choir will also perform.
"We are hoping Eddie may join them on stage and perform like he did here in the '80s," Luna said.
