It has been more than two decades since Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been best buddies. They first connected while working on the 1999 comedy EDtv and from there, they continued their bond and even reunited on True Detective and spent time together with their families.

And the strange question about a possible family secret emerged years ago on a vacation in Greece. Their children were looking through old photos of the actors and couldn't help noticing how alike the two men looked when they were younger.

From their appearance to the mannerism, they looked really similar. Then McConaughey’s mother added an unexpected detail. She revealed that she had known Harrelson’s father before Matthew was born, making it possible that the two friends could share the same biological father.

Brothers, an eight-episode Apple TV comedy will premiere on September 23, 2026 and will take the real rumor and turn it into the starting point for a fictional story.

In the series, a personal crisis brings Harrelson’s fictional family to McConaughey’s Texas ranch. His daughter’s wedding has fallen apart, and the family trip soon becomes much more complicated when the old question of whether the two men are related comes back into focus.

On the other side, McConaughey’s fictional mother, known as Ma Mac will also be part of the story. McConaughey, meanwhile, has his own storyline involving a potential run for governor of Texas.

But the show isn't presenting these events as a hidden account of what really happened. The actors are playing heightened versions of themselves, allowing the writers to take real details and push them into comedy.

Showrunner Lee Eisenberg said:

"Let’s use your life as a jumping-off point, but we’re not doing a docuseries. Let’s play with creative license and make the funniest, most heartwarming version of a show."

This way, Brothers will play with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's public personas, family dynamics, and real friendship without being tied to reality.
