The blogger has remained hospitalized as he undergoes treatment for physical injuries he suffered, including broken bones from a fall, his brother-in-law Tom said on The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker
Now, Tom says that Hilton is preparing to focus on his mental healing
More details are coming out about Perez Hilton‘s condition after an alarming livestream, where he appeared to self-harm earlier this month.
The 48-year-old blogger was hospitalized on Aug. 4 while covered in blood during a TikTok livestream from his Miami home. Authorities treated Hilton for lacerations and an overdose before he was taken to the hospital under Florida’s Baker Act, a state law that allows authorities to hold someone involuntarily for a period of time if they pose a threat of harm to themselves or others.
During the incident, Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., experienced “significant blood loss” and “additional injuries,” requiring surgery, and he has received inpatient medical care, his family previously shared. Following Hilton’s livestream, his TikTok account was banned.
On Monday, Aug. 24, Hilton’s brother-in-law, Tom, shared an update on Hilton’s condition, as well as new information about the evening of Aug. 4, on The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker.
Tom, who is married to Hilton’s youngest sister, Barbara Lavandeira, said that Hilton, whom he said could be “impulsive at times,” packed up and moved to Miami after undergoing emergency surgery for a life-threatening case of sepsis, marking a major turning point for Hilton.
Tom told Booker that Hilton’s move to Miami wasn’t “out of character” for him, especially because he has a support system there with family and close friends. Still, he noted that Hilton told him he immediately regretted the move after landing.
Hilton is a father to three children, Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8, all of whom lived with him and his mother in Miami. Hilton’s children, niece and sister were home minutes before his livestream and fled the property when his sister discovered him harming himself inside his bathroom.
Tom shared on Monday that up until 48 hours before recording the podcast episode, Hilton had been receiving treatment for the physical injuries he suffered from the Aug. 4 incident. “The cutting, a couple of falls that happened during this process,” Tom said.
Some of Hilton’s physical injuries include broken bones and other issues related to his previous struggle with sepsis, his brother-in-law said.
“So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things,” Tom added. “Although, of course, while he’s in the hospital, while he’s being treated for his physical ailments, psychiatrists come in and check in and see how he’s doing and make sure he’s not looking to harm himself.”
“The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I’ve called it, hasn’t been discovered,” Tom said. “I don’t know if it will ever be.”

While theories have circulated that Hilton experienced “sepsis psychosis,” Tom reiterated that no condition has been officially diagnosed.

As for how Hilton is doing now, Tom said Hilton is “lucid.” However, they have not discussed details of what happened on Aug. 4 very often, as he doesn’t want to “trigger any anxiety for him. He added that he instead hopes to give Hilton space to focus on recovering.
“I don’t know how much he does or doesn’t recall,” Tom continued, adding, “We will get into that more once he’s in that setting, where we’re focusing on his mental health.”
No electronics are allowed in Hilton’s room, and he makes calls to his family at the nurse’s station. He has not seen his children since the incident, as they are not permitted in the section where Hilton is undergoing treatment, Tom said.
“He thought he was doing what was best for the children ... At that time, that’s what he thought,” Tom said of Hilton’s mindset during the incident, adding that his family has since told him that is not the case. “His kids adore him, and he’s been a present father.”
Three days after his livestream, Hilton’s mother, Teresita Lavandeira, filed for temporary custody of his children, a move her attorney said was intended to “protect the children and make sure they are safe.”
She was granted temporary custody of Hilton’s children on Aug. 18, and the internet personality was given supervised visitation, TMZ reported, citing court documents. Hilton is required to gain “psychiatric clearance” prior to visits with the children, requirements that will remain in place until Lavandeira files otherwise, the outlet reported.
Looking ahead, Tom said Hilton still has “love” for the entertainment industry, but “the best ways to cope with that” will have to be addressed throughout his recovery. For now, he added, there is no timeline for Hilton’s progress.

Representatives for Hilton shared in a statement on Aug. 5 that they did not “have any additional confirmed information to share regarding Perez Hilton’s condition” and have not commented further in the weeks since.
