Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged before the House Armed Services Committee hearing that he personally ordered the termination of a military investigation into Army pilots who flew Apache helicopters over Kid Rock’s Nashville home. The admission came after a Democratic lawmaker questioned whether the intervention undermines military accountability.

Representative George Whitesides, D-California, pressed Pete Hegseth on his role in ending the Army’s review. “Did you personally direct termination of that review?” Whitesides asked during the hearing. Hegseth replied, “I did.”
Whitesides followed up immediately. “How does canceling a command-initiated review support a culture of accountability?” he asked. The confrontation happened one day after Hegseth posted photographs on social media showing himself and the musician standing before an Army Apache helicopter at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
However, the controversy originated on March 28, when Army pilots flew two Apache helicopters over Kid Rock’s property, which the musician refers to as “The Southern White House.” Kid Rock posted a video showing him saluting one helicopter hovering near his swimming pool and pumping his fist as both aircraft flew past. The Army subsequently launched an investigation and suspended the pilots involved.

Hegseth moved quickly to halt the probe. He wrote on social media, “No punishment. No investigation. Carry on, patriots,” shutting the inquiry down entirely. In a separate post, Hegseth commended the musician, writing, “Kid Rock is a patriot and huge supporter of our troops. The War Department is wasting no time celebrating America’s 250th — home of the free because of the brave.”
Moreover, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell provided an official explanation for the helicopter activity, stating the aircraft were operating “in support of a Freedom 250th community relations event.” Parnell elaborated that Kid Rock “participated in multiple troop touches with service members and filmed videos for Memorial Day, America’s 250th birthday, and for his Freedom 250 tour.” Further adding, “The visit today provided an opportunity for Kid Rock to thank service members, highlight the professionalism of the men and women supporting the mission, and recognize their continued sacrifice in honor of our nation.”
Donald Trump also addressed the incident previously, writing a mixed assessment (via The Mirror).
