The doctors for Pope Leo XIV confirmed Wednesday that he will require no further treatment for his lung cancer after molecular tests found that the cancer he recently had removed from the lower lobe of his right lung was localized.
"The results confirmed that the tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized," his physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and his surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, said in a joint statement. "A subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that no further treatment is necessary,"
Meanwhile, Pope Leo rode through St. Peter’s Square in the popemobile Wednesday, greeting crowds in his first open public appearance there since being released from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

The pope typically spends one or two days away from Vatican City early in the week at another papal residence, but he has not done so this time. Doctors have advised him to continue his recovery at the Vatican.
At this stage, doctors say they see no reason for him to cancel his planned November trip to three countries in South America.
