The Prince of Wales has revealed he once dreamt of becoming a DJ.

Speaking to BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show, the Prince said he called himself “DJ Xara” and “wasn’t very good”.

The royal was speaking during a surprise appearance on the show on Friday night to promote his Earthshot Prize.

The Prince joined Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and Robert Irwin on the red sofa to speak about the environmental award, which connects all four guests.

Speaking with Norton in the prerecorded episode, he said: “I went through a phase where I wanted to be a DJ which didn’t go very well, and I came up with a name. I was called DJ Xara with an X. It wasn’t good.”

Asked whether he had ever played at school parties, the Prince said: “No I didn’t. I never got that good.”

The Prince was responding to a question about whether, as a child, he had ever fantasised about being anything other than King.

“I did want to be a policeman when I was younger. I thought I could make a good policeman... Being a policeman I thought was quite cool,” he added.

The royal was joined by Blanchett, an Earthshot Prize council member, Irwin, a global ambassador for the prize, and Waddingham, who hosted the 2023 Earthshot awards in Singapore.

Mumbai will stage the Earthshot Prize next month, where the future king will meet Bollywood stars and learn about India’s film industry, play with cricketing royalty and preside over the ceremony awarding £5m in prize money.

Speaking about the prize with Norton, the Prince said: “For many years I was hearing stories about environment issues and one thing that struck me was the negativity and doom which got me down.

“I thought we could do something more powerful and more optimistic and the idea of an award’s ceremony came about and we could talk about urgency and optimism together.”

Blanchett described the award, which will give out £50m to inventors and pioneers over a 10-year period, as a “tapestry of solutions” to the climate crisis.

In addition to speaking about the environmental crisis, the Prince admitted to being a member of Aston Villa fan forums and described himself as a fan of both Waddingham’s Ted Lasso and Celebrity Traitors.

The Prince said he recently saw Ross Kemp, who is a contestant on the Celebrity Traitors, and tried to find out who won. He joked that “Ross broke his contract in many areas”, but later added: “No, I’m joking... he didn’t tell me. I did try.”

In an amusing anecdote, the Prince also told the audience that he was recently confused for the singer Prince.

He said: “I went to a place in Somerset and was looking around some of the local communities there. One lovely gentleman looked up at me from his seat and said ‘when are you going to sing?’

“I’ve had many requests over many years... and I said ‘I’m sorry, what do you mean?’ He goes, ‘when are you going to sing your performance?’ and the lady behind tapped his arm and went ‘no, no. He’s not that Prince’.

“It turned out he wanted me to sing Purple Rain, which I don’t know the lyrics for.”
