Saoirse Ronan reveals she wants Bond role as husband becomes 007 frontrunner: ‘I’m dead serious’

It appears that Bond contender Jack Lowden isn’t the only one under his roof who’s eyeing up a role in the next 007 film.

Irish actor Saoirse Ronan, Oscar winner and Lowden’s wife, has revealed that she’s keen to join the cast of the next Bond film – as the iconic British spy’s next villain.

It comes after Lowden became the latest frontrunner to take over from Daniel Craig as James Bond, with the Slow Horses star shooting up the bookies’ favourites list. Earlier this month, Richard Osman said that sources had revealed to him that Lowden was being “strongly considered” for the role as the film entered the final stages of the audition process.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Ronan said that she wants “to go dark” for her next role and Bond’s next villain would do exactly that.

“I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I’m dead serious,” she said. “I think it would be really interesting, having a young female villain.

“Especially for girls and women, to see someone who can just take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere, there’s something interesting in that dramatically. So I would love to do more of that.”

If Ronan is cast as the next Bond villain and contender Lowden secures the roles of 007, they’ll be the first-ever married couple to act opposite one another in a James Bond film.

It would also be the second project they’ve worked on together, having become romantically involved while filming historical drama Mary Queen of Scots in 2018. Ronan starred as the famous monarch while Lowden played Lord Darnley, Mary’s second husband.

They reportedly married in July 2024 in Edinburgh before welcoming their first child the following year.

Lowden is said to be one of the actors that casting director Nina Gold has had an eye on since she began her search for the next Bond in May this year. Gold previously cast Lowden as River Cartwright on Apple TV+’s critically adored thriller Slow Horses, which is heading into its sixth series.

Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi, The Capture’s Callum Turner and Babygirl’s Harris Dickinson are also reportedly in the running to play the Aston Martin-driving, martini-sipping spy.

Fans have been waiting since 2021 to find out who’ll be stepping into Daniel Craig’s shoes, with the actor having left the role after No Time To Die. However, producer Amy Pascal revealed earlier this month that she’s likely to have some news on that front by the end of the year.

“We are being really, really methodical,” she added. “Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio, I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow.”

Meanwhile, Theo James recently ruled himself out of the race for Bond, admitting that he’s “too old” for the role.
