A preview for The Gilded Age Season 4 reveals that Enid Winterton (Kelley Curran) accepted Oscar Van Rhijn’s (Blake Ritson) proposal at the end of Season 3. And in Season 4, they’re plotting a course for social domination by taking down Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

As announced on August 25, The Gilded Age Season 4 premieres Sunday, November 1, at 9/8c on HBO. Curran has been promoted to a series regular.

The closeted Oscar and social-climber Enid have been in cahoots since Season 1, when Enid was a lady’s maid for Bertha. She was fired for trying to seduce George Russell (Morgan Spector), and then Enid married a rich older man. He died in Season 3, leaving Enid rich but widowed. Oscar, who lost his family’s fortune, suggested they marry to help each other create the lives they want. They both know each other’s secrets and are equally ambitious, so they’re joining forces to gain more social power.

“The goal is to become the pinnacle of high society,” Ritson told Vanity Fair. “It’s to take down Mrs. Astor, to shoot past Mrs. Russell, and to be the king and queen of high society.”

“They’re always boundary-pushing individually and now as a pair,” Curran added. “So it’s double the fun.”

Enid is scheming for more status in the first teaser for The Gilded Age Season 4, above. And she seems eager to reignite her rivalry with Bertha as we previously theorized she would.

“Mrs. Astor and Mrs. Russell have defined what society means for them. Doesn’t it stand to reason that we should be the ones to decide what it means for us?” Enid says in the teaser.

Right after, Oscar smiles and says, “What have I gotten myself into?”

“And where is your husband this evening?” Enid asks Bertha later on, who is cagey in her response about her husband’s absence.

Whether Enid and Oscar are actually married in The Gilded Age Season 4 or just engaged, they’re clearly determined to change their fortunes. Watch out, New York.
