The '80s classic Pretty in Pink charmed the hearts of many high schoolers and young adults when it first premiered on Feb. 28, 1986.The movie gave everyone hope that love and friendship would conquer all, no matter what side of the tracks you grew up on or what level of popularity you had in high school. It spoke to the youth — and continues to — making it an essential movie to watch in teen years, as well as beyond.
The film — which was written and directed by John Hughes — featured actors Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, John Cryer and James Spader. For many, it was a beacon of inspiration that helped people define their personal aesthetic (since Molly Ringwald's character, Angie Walsh, was a fashionista who yearned to be a clothing designer). Iona’s advice was zesty and sweet, helping us see that we can create a chosen family and gain support from them.Over the past 40 years, the rom-com hasn't lost its flavor or appeal. Many people still debate whether Andy should have gone off with Duckie instead of Blane, but perhaps it's her Taurus sentiments that allowed her to commit to him in the end — but, who can resist Leo's light when it's shining upon you?!?
Speaking of astrology, we assigned each character to a zodiac sign that resonates with their character and aura, which transcends the silver screen. In honor of Pretty in Pink’s 40th solar return (the movie is a tender and romantic Pisces, which makes total sense), read below to find out who you resonate the most with, based on your Sun sign.
Aries: Benny Hanson

Benny, who’s Steff’s girlfriend, is sassy and thinks she is above everyone in her class, mostly Andie and Jena. On occasion, Aries have a superiority complex because they are the first sign of the zodiac and exude power and influence. Benny may not be the nicest person, but people do what she says because of her leadership and acclaim in the hallways at high school.
Taurus: Andie Walsh

Being that Venus rules earthy Taurus, they are creative and artistic, much like Andie, who’s a budding fashion designer. Further, she is obstinate in her feelings and won't bow down to anyone, which is in tune with the practical and stubborn demeanor of the Bull. Tauruses are the same; they aren't afraid of stating their emotions, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.
Gemini: Philip F. "Duckie" Dale

Duckie is a fun and loyal friend who’s in love with Andie. In true Gemini form, Duckie has the gift of gab, cracking jokes to Andie to change her mood — his eccentricities and ability to lighten any situation make it better. Duckie is an outsider on the fringe, likes being his own person, and isn't affected by anyone else, which is in accordance with Gemini.
Cancer: Simon

Simon is a member of Andie’s crew and inserts low-key shady commentary when they are out. Cancers let their friends be aware of foreseeable problems due to their desire to protect those who are a part of their circle. When the crab lets you in, they'll be your biggest cheerleader and defender, using their pincers (or musical instrument, in his case) to ward off evil.
Leo: Blane McDonnagh

Blane has main character energy, too bad he cares too much about what others think. In defense of him being a Leo, Blane is one of the most well-liked members of the student body, making any Leo blush. At the core, he’s sensitive like a baby cub, but finds his roar at the end of the film when he stands up for himself and Andie.

Virgo: English Teacher

Andie’s teacher may not have a major role, but she’s fair-minded and doesn’t play favorites. When the English teacher becomes aware that Benny and Trombley are being rude to Andie, she gives them extra assignments. A Virgo would do the same if they witness bullying, due to their sympathetic souls. To get back at someone misbehaving, Virgos pick the proper punishment as they see fit.
Libra: Trombley

Trombley goes with the flow and follows the social scene, particularly what her best friend, Benny (the leader of the pack), dictates. Libras relish popularity and don't like to make waves, making Trombley an ideal candidate for the sign. Also, her loyalty to Benny speaks to Libra’s need to maintain connections, even if they aren't in tune with how their ride or die is behaving.
Scorpio: Jena Hoeman
Jena is Andie’s bestie, with a snarky yet fabulous aura. She's a rebel, acting against the norms of what school expects of her. Scorpios defy those who limit their evolution and growth, kind of like how Jena reacts to her snooty classmates and teachers. Her vibe is totally punk, since she challenges the status quo, as any Scorpio would — which is why she’s fabulous!
Sagittarius: Bouncer

The bouncer at Cats deserves a shout-out. Even though it is not a major role, the character is memorable. The loudmouth Bouncer who later befriends Duckie is definitely iconic. His to-the-point, blunt, and funny portrayal resembles the attitude of Sagittarius, a zodiac sign that isn’t afraid to assert itself. All the more reason why the Bouncer resembles the fiery nature of the archer.
Capricorn: Steff McKee

Steff believes in authority and order, which are qualities that describe the earth sign Capricorn. He will go to any lengths to ensure he comes out on top, even pitting his best friend against a classmate that they both are crushing on. Capricorns can be tough and like to be known for their status, the comparison ends there — no zodiac sign can be that icky.
Aquarius: Iona

Iona’s a unique character. Iona marches to the beat of her own tune (literally, because she owns Trax, a music store) and lives by her own rules, similarly to how Aquarius goes about their business. At the core, she has a tender spirit that serves as a surrogate sister figure to Andie and a source of camaraderie to Duckie, reflecting the compassionate side of Aquarius.
Pisces: Jack Walsh

Jack is lovesick over his wife, who left years ago. Pisces can be haunted by the past, which can manifest in self-pity. He is there for his daughter, Andie, but afraid to move into the present and future. When hurt and sad, Pisces find solace and comfort in rolling up into a cocoon to feel safe and escape reality; it’s a parallel to Jack’s behavior.
