By the end of season 1, Fawcett was ready to step away from her role as Jill Munroe on *Charlie’s Angels*. In 1979, she told *The Dallas Times Herald *(per the TV network MeTV) that she felt “creatively stifled” and wanted to challenge herself with new roles and opportunities beyond the show.

Fawcett also admitted that the fame and merchandising that came with the show also took a toll on her. “I think what has bothered me the most was all of the merchandising,” she told the outlet. “Things over which I had no control: the bedsheets and things like that. I didn’t like any of that, but there wasn’t much that could be done about it.”

Her former assistant, Mike Pingel, who now runs the *Charlie’s Angels *website, later explained why this frustrated the four-time Emmy-nominated actress. “When you’re on a hit show, that’s what you’re identified by,” he said in a 2019 interview with *Closer Weekly*. “All the Angels, at one point or another, didn’t want to talk about *Charlie’s Angels*, because they wanted to be recognized for what they were doing then, or their current roles, or their nominations.”

Fawcett’s iconic *Charlie’s Angels *poster, Pingel added, became a cultural phenomenon in its own right. “Her face was everywhere, on every magazine cover, on billboards,” he said. “There were actually magazines in the ‘70s that didn’t even have articles about her, but would just put her on the cover anyway … because it sold magazines.”

All of this made it clear that Fawcett’s time as a main cast member on *Charlie’s Angels* had run its course (she returned as a guest star in seasons 3 and 4), leaving producers with the job of finding someone new to fill the void left by its beloved Angel.

After Fawcett left, Cheryl Ladd joined *Charlie’s Angels *in season 2 and stayed until the series concluded in 1981.

In a March 2026 interview with* Woman’s World*, Ladd revealed that she initially hesitated to join the show. She was worried about stepping into the world Fawcett had left and being seen as “the new” Fawcett. Eventually, she realized she could carve out her own place on the series.

Ladd told *Woman’s World* she had worked with executive producer Aaron Spelling before, so when Fawcett decided to leave, he called her and said, “Cheryl, I want you to replace Farrah. I want you to come in and be on the show.”

“And I said, ‘Oh, thank you, but no thank you. I appreciate it, but no,’” Ladd recalled. “I’m sure he was quite upset with me, because he had given me work before and just didn’t understand.”

Spelling, who died in 2006, didn’t give up. “He went off and looked at hundreds of girls and finally called me back and said, ‘I can’t find the girl I want. I want you, Cheryl. Just come in and talk to me?’” Ladd remembered. “So I did. I sat across the desk from him in his office and I said, ‘Aaron, what would I play? Nobody can go in there and try to be Farrah Fawcett or try to be the new Farrah Fawcett. What would I play?’”

He reassured Ladd that she would be playing her own character and wouldn’t be replacing Fawcett.

“I said, ‘Could I be funny?’ And he said, ‘Why couldn’t you be funny?’ That was interesting,” she recounted. “Then I said, ‘If I was a rookie, I could make mistakes.’ And he said, ‘I love that.’”

She added, “And this is Aaron’s absolute genius; he said, ‘What if you’re Jill’s little sister, so you’re already part of the family?’ And then I said, ‘You have an actress.’ Now I knew who Kris Munroe was going to be and how to play something that wasn’t trying to be Farrah, other than the fact that Kris looked up to her big sister and thought she was wonderful and I got to love her with everyone else.”
