If your TikTok For You page looks anything like mine, then you’ve likely watched a beauty guru or two perfectly match their foundation to their skin tone by adding a couple of dots of purple blush. What looks like a real-life magic trick is actually a simple color-correcting hack popularized by influencer and makeup artist Rose Siard, who ignited the trend with her viral video back in January.
After chatting with the creator over Zoom, she explained that she’s always loved applying color theory in her 20 years as a professional makeup artist. “I’ve always made purple with blue and red mixing pigments,” she says, “but I’ve been using the Rare Beauty blush in the shade Spirited for the past two years, which is what went viral.” Rather than traditional color correcting, where you tediously add shades of blue, red, or yellow into your foundation until it matches, Siard makes the math simple: “Purple neutralizes yellow,” so if a complexion product isn’t quite right, try adding a dot or two of purple blush.
Purple blushes are also a staple product in professional makeup collections for being, well, blush. “Purple blush is one of the most unique and transformative shades you can use,” says celebrity makeup artist Melissa Hurkman. “It has the ability to brighten, lift, and add dimension to the face in a way that traditional pinks and peaches don’t—it feels fresh, unexpected, and elevated.” The vibrant shade also enhances the natural tones already present in the skin, especially in deeper complexions, making the skin look “richer and more alive, rather than just flushed.”
