Scream 7 released in theaters on Feb. 27

While promoting the film, director Kevin Williamson said star Neve Campbell has a "great idea" for Scream 8

However, another addition to the slasher franchise hasn't been confirmed yet

Fans aren't ready for Scream to end — and neither are its stars.

"Those movies have been such a big part of my life, and it means so much to me," Neve Campbell, who has played original "final girl" Sidney Prescott for 30 years, told PEOPLE in May 2024. "I'm grateful to be able to step in into Sidney's shoes again and tell her story."

Scream 7 reintroduces Sidney as a mom, whose quiet life with her family is upended after a new Ghostface resurfaces and puts a target on her daughter Tatum's (Isabel May) back.

And with Campbell once again at the heart of the franchise, the question becomes inevitable: Will there be a Scream 8? Here’s everything to know about what’s next for the franchise, including what the stars have said about returning for another chapter.

Scream 8 has not been confirmed. But that doesn't mean the team behind the seventh installment isn't up for it.

Director and co-writer Kevin Williamson told Deadline in February 2026 that he and Campbell have already started "spit-balling" the next film.

“When you’re sitting on the set at 3 in the morning, you’re like, ‘Well, what would Scream 8 be about?’ " he explained. "Neve had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it. So yeah, if this movie works and people want it, we’re here for the fans. So, if they want it, we’ll certainly give it to them.”

As it hasn't been confirmed, it's not clear what Scream 8 would be about, but fans can assume it'll center on a story around Sidney. However, Campbell promised this time around there would be less gore than Scream 5 and 6.

"I had felt that those last 2 ... went in a direction that was sort of off path with Wes [Craven], with how he did gore, or how he did the killings," she said in a February 2026 interview with Evolution Of Horror. "I had felt that, for my personal preference, it was a bit far. If it’s grounded, it’s okay. It’s going to be more effective if it’s grounded."

Who could be in the cast of Scream 8?

Which cast members will return for a potential Scream 8 depends heavily on whether their characters survived Scream 7.

The most recent film starred Campbell and May along with Joel McHale, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos and Ethan Embry.

Fans were also treated to a number of familiar faces, including Courteney Cox, Scott Foley, Matthew Lillard and David Arquette, who reprised their roles from the first six movies. Seeing as the latter three died in previous iterations, even a character's death doesn't guarantee they won't return.

Out of the seven Scream movies, Campbell has appeared in six. She made a small cameo in Scream 5 and passed on Scream 6 entirely over a pay dispute. So it stands to reason that she could make a comeback for Scream 8.

But when asked in February 2026 if she would return to the franchise for another film, the actress told GamesRadar+ that she couldn't say "because you don't know what happens to me in this one."

That same month, however, she admitted to Entertainment Tonight that it would be "fun" to do a Scream 8, so long as fans enjoyed the seventh film.
